About Tom Petty / Heartbreakers / Wilburys:

Tom Petty was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who was born on October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida. He first gained fame in the 1970s as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a rock band that he formed in Los Angeles in 1976. The original line-up of the Heartbreakers consisted of Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, bassist Ron Blair, keyboardist Benmont Tench, and drummer Stan Lynch.

The Heartbreakers' self-titled debut album was released in 1976 and included the hit single "Breakdown." The band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Damn the Torpedoes" (1979), "Hard Promises" (1981), and "Southern Accents" (1985). Some of the band's most famous songs include "Refugee," "American Girl," and "Free Fallin'."

In addition to his work with the Heartbreakers, Petty was also a member of the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, which also included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. The group released two albums, "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1" (1988) and "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3" (1990), before Orbison's death in 1988.

Petty continued to release successful albums as a solo artist throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including "Wildflowers" (1994) and "Highway Companion" (2006). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, and continued to tour and perform until his death on October 2, 2017, at the age of 66.

The Heartbreakers reunited after Petty's death for a tribute concert in his honour, but have not released any new music since then. Mike Campbell has since formed a new band called The Dirty Knobs.

Overall, Tom Petty was a hugely influential figure in American rock music, known for his distinctive voice, heartfelt lyrics, and classic songwriting style. He left behind a legacy of timeless music that continues to inspire and entertain music fans around the world.
