Cody Johnson Art Print: A Music Map of Studio Albums and Connections

Cody Johnson Albums in Order: One Man, Then Forty-Three

The Cody Johnson Discography Map Art Print covers nine releases from 2007 to 2023, with every credited musician drawn as a line. When I built the research sheet for it, one column told the whole story before I had drawn anything.

The Credited Musician Count, Album by Album

Album Year Credited musicians
Live and Rocking 2007 1
Six Strings One Dream 2009 2
Black and White Label 2011 1
A Different Day 2011 1
Cowboy Like Me 2014 3
Gotta Be Me 2016 16
Ain't Nothin' to It 2019 23
Human: The Double Album 2021 43
Leather 2023 36

One, two, one, one, three. Then sixteen, twenty-three, forty-three, thirty-six.

Seven years of records made by essentially one man, and then the wall comes down. On the map that reads as a single thin line running along the bottom left of the sheet, almost bare, before the whole right-hand side fills up. I have mapped more than seventy artists and I cannot think of another where the shape changes that abruptly.

The Independent Years, 2007 to 2014

Four of the first five releases credit either one musician or two. Black and White Label (2011) and A Different Day (2011) credit Cody Johnson and nobody else at all.

The one exception is Cowboy Like Me in 2014, and it is the detail I like most on this map. It credits three people: Cody Johnson, Carl Johnson and Sheila Johnson. Two of the three names on that record are family. On a tube map, that is two branch lines arriving at a single station and stopping there, which is a fairly moving way to draw the start of a career.

2016: The Session Players Arrive

Gotta Be Me jumps from three credited musicians to sixteen. That is where the Nashville session world enters the map: Aubrey Haynie, Rob McNelley, Derek Wells, John Willis, J.T. Corenflos, Justin Ostrander, Scotty Sanders, Brian Pruitt, Tammy Rogers and Trent Willmon among them.

Several of those lines do not stop. Trent Willmon and Justin Ostrander both run from 2016 through to Leather in 2023, which makes them the longest lines on the map after Cody Johnson's own. Scotty Sanders and Brian Pruitt are close behind.

Ain't Nothin' to It, and Alison Krauss

The 2019 album takes the count to twenty-three, and it carries the single most striking guest credit in the catalogue: Alison Krauss on background vocals and fiddle, on one track.

That is a short branch line on the map, one station and gone, and it is exactly the sort of credit that makes the research worth doing. It is also where a good deal of the current touring band first appears: Jake Mears, Jody Bartula, Joey Pruski and Miles Stone all arrive here and carry on through the next two records.

Human: The Double Album, the Busiest Station

Forty-three credited musicians in 2021, the most populated station on the whole print. A double album pulls in a double cast, and the guest list is the reason:

  • Willie Nelson, with Mickey Raphael, his harmonica player of five decades
  • Red Steagall, Rhonda Vincent, Ingrid Andress, Corb Lund and Ned LeDoux
  • Dale Brisby, which is the only rodeo credit anywhere in my catalogue

One small research note from this station. Amber White is credited on Gotta Be Me in 2016 and appears again on Human as Amber White McDonough. Same person, two sleeve credits, five years apart. I follow the sleeves, so both names are on the map, and that is the sort of thing you only catch by going record by record.

Leather, 2023

Thirty-six credited musicians, and the guest list stays wide: Brooks & Dunn, Jelly Roll, Jessi Alexander, Josh Swift and Travis Toy among them, alongside The Rockin' CJB, the touring band credited as a unit.

The core holds. Willmon, Ostrander, Sanders, Mears, Bartula, Pruski and Stone are all still there, which is why the right-hand side of the map is dense rather than chaotic. It widened, but it did not churn.

Where the Research Comes From

Every name on this map comes out of my own Cody Johnson research spreadsheet, built album by album from the sleeve credits and cross-checked against published discography sources. The musician counts in the table above are straight off that sheet.

That is how all of these are made. No generated layouts, no scraped lists, and no guessing at who played on what.
